Iyengars of Bero ( Godi Bero ), West Bengal

Iyengars are Vaishnavite Brahmins. This community started taking shape about 1000 years ago based on the philosophy of Nathamuni.
.Ramanuja, the great saint and philosopher could formalize the Nathamuni’s efforts in to religious system of life style. There are to distinct sub sects of Iyengars known as Vadagalai or of Northern origin and Ten kali or Tamil origin. Basic traditions and culture of both the sub sects are same. They can be distinguished by colored religious mark on the forehead.Vadagalai male put U shaped mark while ten kali put Y shaped mark on the forehead.

History of settlement-

Iyengars are mainly settled in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh . A small section has settled in the village Bero (Godi Bero), Purulia, West Bengal. Migration of  this vaishnavite community from South India to a remote  village of  Purulia District of West Bengal is connected with the history of  Panchakot Raj, Although no authentic history of settlement Iyengars in Bero is available but  from the publication of Sri B.K.Gokhle,ICS,Settlement Officer Chotanagpur, named” Survey and Settlement Operation”,”, published in the year 1928 at Govt.Printing Press,Patna. It has been recorded that in the middle of 17th century a learned and virtuous Brahmin named Trilochanacharya alias Tiru Ranga charya alias Trilochan .of Kanchi, while retuning from pilgrimage of various North Indian shrines on foot came to the foot hills of Panchakot for rest. While he was meditating cowherds nearby saw eminating radiant rays from his body. This supernatural phenomenon was reported to the then Maharaja of Panchakot state, Sri Satrughna Singh alias Gorur Narayan Singh.Maharaja, after seeing the wonderful phenomenon prayed him to live in his palace and to initiate him as his disciple..The saint did not agree to his proposal but agreed to send his brother Rangaraj who was also a saint of high order to become the Guru of Maharaja of Panchakot. After some time probably in the year 1651 brother of Tirumalacharya,Sri Rangaraj arrived at Panchakot and  met the maharaja.Later the saint initiated the maharaja as his disciple. After few days sri Rangaraj  moved his residence to the foothill of Bero hills and prayed for the Mohantaship of the deity Sri Keshab Roy Jiu of the Bero temple. The Maharaja of Panchakot state granted him Sevait(custodian) of the deity and also made him custodian of 57 1\2 Mouzas of Devattar state on behalf of the deity.Other family members of Sri Rangaraj were also brought to Bero.So the village Bero became the permanent seat(Gadi) of Mohantta.since then Bero is also known as Gadi Bero. This also marked the beginning of settlement of Iyengars in this part of  Eastern India.
In course of time many other Iyengar families from different parts of the then Madras Province migrated to this village under the patronage of the Raj Guru and the Maharaja of Panchakot. The Maharaja had special likings for this Vedic orthodox south Indian Brahmins.Brahmotter properties were donated to each such family Migration continued till 19th century during the tenure of different maharajas, In the mean time the capital of the Panchakot state shifted to Kashipur village after the attack of Bargis.More than forty families settled in this village and gradually adapted to the new socio-linguistic environment.. .This micro settlement of Iyengars kept intact the south Indian traditions and customs and with the passage of time local cultures were also adapted .Functions like Upanayan,Marriage etc. are still being held  in South Indian traditions..

Survival of Iyengars in this alien environment can be attributed to their contributions in the field of Education and culture of the area. Establishment of a High School by the then Mahanta Raj Gopal Acharya Goswami in the village was an impotant step. Later on with the contributions from Iyengar community and also from other donors High School for girls was also established.Since the abolition of zamindari agricultural income of Iyengars of the village was reduced and migration of educated youth for job began. New settlements within the country and abroad are being made by the Iyengars from Bero .Many of them are maintaining contact with their ancestral place. It is expected that this article will evoke response from all persons belonging to Iyengar community who have direct or indirect connection with the place. Their suggestions are welcome.
A number of persons belonging to Godi Bero Iyengar community have contributed in different walks of life such as  Dr V Ranga Chari,Mathematician,Dr Govinda Chari,Pricipal,Patna Medical College,Dr N K Achari,Neuro Surgeon Dr A N Achari Physician,Sri S.Vir Raghab Achari,Freedom fighter,Sri Basudeb Achari,MP,

  2. It is just a small attempt to attract attention & interest among all those who are connected to the community of Bero. There may be many more names which should be included but lack of information may the reason for such ommission. There is no deliberate intention behind it.Authers attempt for the blog deserves praise.

    2. Hi I want to ask you why do u say that the name are not heard of??? Dr. A.G Achari was special director of health services of bihar in 1979..his house was just opposite to the temple and he was the son in law of the palace house and the husband of Janki Achari Goswami..Its clear that the website is biased or the you don't even know what you're talking about as Gopal Achari IPS retired as a Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau in 2001 and not joint director of CBI..He was an IGP of Ranchi and Bhagalpur later he went to CBI as jt director from 1989 to 96 and got promoted as a special director later home ministry transferred him to Narcotics Control Bureau as a DG..talking about Dr. Anand Gopal Achari whose name has been deliberately ignored passed out from PMCH in 1944 and went on to become the famous Civil Surgeon of Patna and Special Director of Health Services of Bihar who along with WHO eradicated small pox from bihar and got an award for it..Everyone knows him and his family in Bihar jharkhand and bero..So kindly check ur facts or if u still ignore and say that there's no one by name Dr. A.G Achari(Anand Gopal Achari) then i would say this website is completely biased..

  10. My side of story. My father and uncle were born in Bero to Kamala and Rajagopalachariar. Kamala was the first daughter of Ramachndra Goswami and Ranganayaki from Tirunelveli (Bedo grandma to us). I was told their younger daughter was Sita whose son Vasudevan IAS was petroleum secretary under Indira Gandhi. Bedo paatti also mentioned Jagannath Chariar (brother of Ramachndra Goswami), Kothai paatti and their son Seemachu a.k.a Sreenivasan. my uncle was also names as Ramachndran after his grand pa. I heard lots of stories about Bedo since my father Badri Narayanan was born in Bero. Can share more stories later.

    1. To reach to Bero from Kolkata, you have to reach Asansole jn. and then to Bero station within 30 minutes. Or else take the Kolkata-Purulia exp (2 trains), alight on Adra jn (10 km) and then hire one Rickshaw to bero. For accomodation, you need to request the local Iyengar, whose numbers are falling. Otherwise stay in Raghunathpur (6 km) Inspection Bunglow, Asansole, Purulia Town or in Adra. Travel to bero in the morning, spend the entire day, trekk to the Bero hill, Chandi pahar area and return to to the town in the afternoon. You may get food there. Please contact, Ananda Achari or Vasanta Sitti (in Mahaprabhu house, near the Keshav temple) after reaching Bero. Thanks, SoumyaNarayan

My name is Srinivas Acharya @ Basant and I live in Chennai (Mobile: +919444399169, email: srinivas.acharya@gmail.com). Late Gopalagovindachari @ Gobindobabu was my grandfather and Late Barda Acharya @Bodonunu was my father. I do visit Bero now and then and have fond memories of some of the people who are no more. I do remember late Ranganayaki patti (mentioned by Mr N Kumar). I also knew late Dr N K Achari @ Kishtokaka and his nephews (also mu uncles) Dr A N Achari @ Babukaka and Mr Achyut Achari @ Khokonkaka. I know a no of people in Chennai who trace their roots to Bero. I request everyone of you to give you contact details like phone no/mail ID, so that we can meet even locally outside Bero. It is, however, a good idea to have a get-gether of all of us in Bero. For this, we need to plan well in advance so that even people abroad could make it to such a get-together. I compliment the efforts in bringing out this blog. Regards Basant

The bengali Iyengars are using Achari, Acharya, Chari, Bhattaru and Goshwamy as their sunames. Now they are giving modern names to their children.

  16. It is nice to get connected with people having common roots. As I mentioned earlier my paternal grand ma is Kamala, daughter of rajaguru Ramachandra Goswami. His wife Ranganayaki used to live with us till her 99th birthday. She used to describe about Kesavji temple. She brought some blue flower creeper seeds (shanku pushpam) and used to make garlands for our poojas. She taught me some bhajans (Mastya, Koorma, Varaha avatari, etc. ) she also used to read virat purva in Bengali to invoke rain gods! She mentioned many names including jumuna who used to live in Nadu street in mylapore. My dad and Patti used to converse only in Bengali though my dad left Bero @ 5. I would like to keep in touch with all if you. Next time when I visit India I would like to visit Bero and have darshan of Kesavji. Please keep in touch.

My Great grand father Sri Ranganath Acharya Goswamy (Choto Gusain) was the younger brother of Mahaprabhu Sri Ramchandra Acharya Goswamy. But he decided to stay separately and built a house, just the opposite the Mahaprabhu mahal and in the foot of the beautiful BeroHill. He was a kind hearted Zaminder and a nature lover. My grand father was Sri LakhsmiNarayan Acharya Goswamy and my father was Sri Ranganatha Acharya. However our house is in ruins at present and currently its members are living in many parts pf the country and abroad. I am living in Bengaluru. My name is Sri SoumyaNarayan Acharia. I studied in SRCA Vidyalaya. And left the village after completing my Matriculation. My emailid is: narayanachar001@gmail.com

My thatha along with 3 friends started a school in the year 1925 which is known as Sri ram Chandra adarsha vidyalaya. My thatha use to not even get salary for initial years... His son I.e. my uncle Mr.Venkat achari also studied there and become teacher in the same school.unfortunately he passed away in 2010. 2 of His children (my cousins) still live in Bero along with my aunty. 53. My grandmother's grandfather was Ramachandrachari. Her father was R Krishnamachari (Chotu Malik). Great information you have shared. It was very cool to read this with my grandmother. My grandmother's name is Shanta Krishnamachari.

  54. I would also humbly request if any of Satamarshana Gotra’s Suyamachariyas or Acharya Purushas - who can do Samaashanam are still doing the same or practicing. Me and my wife are yet to be done with the Samashanam ritual - would be pleased to know. Thanks.
